Conner grumpily glanced over the table, his eyes drifting to the Kent’s small TV that rested snug on the kitchen table. It lay in the corner as it dimly displayed the local weather for Smallville.
The weather was lively, sunny and happy. But Conner didn’t feel the same, instead, he idly wrote in his notebook, making two columns. On the right side the title was, “WHAT WOULD SUPERMAN DO?”
Conner had found immediate comfort in studying the history of his mentor, Superman. The notebook was notes and data he had gathered, and he had decided after brooding the fear of Luthor’s control, that he had to be more like Clark. Clark was good, Luthor was bad…right? But…he had half and half of them inside of him.
It was like the old Indian story, where a small child asked the Wiseman about the wolves. There was two wolves inside each person, one bad, one good. The child inquired which one won their fight between good and evil, and the Wiseman had a humble response; “Which one you feed.”
The concept was the same in Conner’s mind. It took his attention away from the past events he had lived through; it gave him a simple objective he felt he could achieve.
He had recently just settled back in Smallville, back from the dead, and back to Martha Kent’s loving embrace. She had recently lost her beloved husband, so she was more than happy to have Conner back home. Whenever she looked at the boy of steel she could see he was troubled by the idea of Luthor taking control of him again, but she couldn’t discover the words to comfort the boy.
Conner was pulled from his thoughts when he heard heavy footsteps coming into the kitchen; he looked up to be greeted by The Man of Steel. “Clark!” He grinned, joyful to see the inspiration he needed.
Superman looked down at Conner and smiled, “Hey. I came to talk to you actually.” He said, he had received Martha’s worried phone call and decided to come as quickly as he could.
The conversation between the two took place on the porch, Superman tells Conner that he shouldn’t worry about Luthor, that he will take care of it. “See? Everything will be fine. You just worry about yourself, Lex won’t harm you, alright?” Superman asked. He hated to cut this short but he didn’t like leaving Metropolis for too long during the busy days.
Conner nodded, reassuring Superman. “Yeah, I understan’ all right.” When the Man of Steel left Conner looked back to his notebook, and flipped to the next page. The title said, “What would Lex Luthor do?”
Conner put a small check mark next to “Lie to Superman”.
